1528 : Rana Sangram Singh of Mewar expired.

1903 : Lord Curzon opened the Imperial Library (National Library in 1948) in Metcalfe Hall in Calcutta.

1948 : Mahatma Gandhi was assasinated by Nathuram Vinayak Godse in Birla House of New Delhi at 5:10 p.m. Since then it is observed as the Martyr's Day.

1949 : Night Airmail service was introduced.

1971 : Indian Airline's Fokker Friendship plane was hijacked to Lahore which was subsequently destroyed. This was the first such incident in India's history.

1985 : The Constitution 52nd Amendment Bill on automatic disqualification of political defectors was passed by Lok Sabha.
