1857 : Calcutta University was founded.

1951 : Prem Mathur was the first woman pilot to get a commercial license.

1952 : The first International Film Festival was held in Bombay.

1966 : Air India's Boeing 707 crashed in the Alps in Switzerland in which 144 people perished including the nuclear scientist Homi Bhabha.
