Major Historical Events That Took Place on 15th January

1784 : Asiatic Society of Bengal was established.

1934 : Earthquake in Bihar took a toll of 20,000 lives. Monghyr town was razed to the ground.

1949 : Indian Army came under the first Indian Commander-in-Chief General K.M.Cariappa. Since then this date is observed as the Army Day of India.

1965 : Food Corporation of India was set up.

1978 : The President promulgated an Ordinance demonetising currency notes of Rs.1,000/- and above.

1986 : Gen. K.M. Cariappa (retd.) was made Honorary Field Marshal for life.

1986 : For the first time Indian Airllines had an all women crew on commercial passenger flight.
